:: Marc Cohn - The Very Best of Marc CohnMarc CohnYou might remember Marc Cohn from his debut Grammy award-winning release in 1991, “Walking In Memphis” a powerful soul searching ditty that he penned about “The history of American music,” according to the album sleeve. It was his most commercially successful track. His latest album release is a cross-section and an examination of his work so far. The unique singer/songwriter has maintained his soulful, and intrinsically contemplative and articulate style of music, that borderlines folk. If you had to categorise Cohn’s style it would be adult contemporary American pop/rock. If you sit down and really listen to his lyrics, it is like he is telling stories and singing his heart and his mind, reminiscent of Carole King and Eva Cassidy. There is a raw edge to his music that is driven by his raspy voice and lyrics that is soothing, for example tracks like “Turn on Your Radio” and “One Safe Place” really hit home. What is really interesting, however, is the time at which Cohn has released this album. It is definitely a rare “best of” album indeed that reminds you that there is more to music than bronzed bodies in skirts and bikinis and hairy rock tunes. | ![]() |
