:: Miike Snow - Miike SnowMiike SnowMiike Snow is very underground and hard to pin down. The write-up says they‘re a Swedish 'pop’ band, but they‘re nothing like their fellow countrymen, ABBA. Instead this trio dabbles in much more than pop, mixing electro, new rave and just a touch of emo to produce a creative album that sounds like its jumped right out of a Mario video game and onto the dance floor. Miike Snow's self-titled debut album is something you'd only expect from a European band who is very comfortable with the dance scene and willing to take it to an altogether stranger direction. The entire album is fast, fresh and very experimental. Sure not all the tracks hit the mark, i.e “Black & Blue”, with its unsuccessful Scissor Sisters meets gospel beat, and some of the songs almost sound the same, but it's impossible to deny that this band is doing something impressively progressive. “Animal” is the perfect example of the boys’ immense talent and musical vision. Pumping horns, guitars and drums are given the synth treatment and the vocal harmonies take on a reggae vibe, it's all very cool. “Burial” is just as good, but this time an African tribal intro is seamlessly mixed into happy and carefree keyboard rifts, all of which leave you content and thinking about the good old days of Wham! and 80's dance pop. But the album's song-of-the-year contender has to be “Silvia”. Now this is a song that has absolutely everything: pulsating and earth shattering dance beats, psychotically high vocals, longing lyrics and a synth-tastic melody that leaves you dancing long after it's over. Google Miike Snow and you'll get next to nothing. Supposedly they like the anonymity, but it's really a shame this band isn't better known. On YouTube fans profess their love for the band and the one thing almost everyone mentions is just how unique and original their sound is. And they're absolutely right. Miike Snow is definitely the future of music and a must have album no matter what you're into. | ![]() |
