:: Mojave 3 - Spoon And Rafter

Mojave 3

There had been speculation about the future of Mojave 3 when lead singer Neil Halstead released a solo album over a year ago. Thankfully no, as this new album sees the band return with a sublime set of songs that evoke surreal, yet impacting, feelings. The dreamy songs and Halstead’s almost whispering-like vocals send you on a rare journey. There is no real identity behind the music, with elements of slide-steel guitar, banjo, harmonica, and piano. The subtlety of the sound is set up by Halstead’s poignant lyrics and aching guitar. It is most expressive and has a country feel at times. Particular highlights are “She’s All Up Above” and the pop strains of “Tinker’s Blues”. An interesting track is the nine-minute long “Bluebird Of Happiness”, which is one song divided up into three parts, of ranging emotions and depth. It might seem experimental when, in fact, it isn’t. Generally, the arrangements are in good form and Halstead’s music is worth hearing. You will notice the background harmonies by Rachel Goswell. She could probably take a more prominent vocal position because of her gorgeous angel-like singing. It’s still a refreshing and warm album of the pop/country variety, for the romantics of the world.
