It’s always refreshing to hear of a new Australian performer, even though in this case, Nina Czempinski is no novice. It’s simply that in the often cut-throat business of making music, one sometimes doesn’t realise how many artists there are looking for that big break in forging a successful career. Nina’s first album, a play on words from the one of Stevie Wonder’s albums, shows a unique flair in the well-crafted songs and much personality in delivering them. There is good versatility with Nina being adept at different styles through her experience in funk, blues, jazz and pop. She is a natural performer, with a subtle, tongue-in-cheek sense and has been able to hone the production quality through her home studio in outer Melbourne, and accompanied by some fine local jazz musicians. It’s a fine achievement for the do-it-yourself style, where Nina has worked hard over time to produce a record of merit. She has just launched the album and we can look forward to her entertaining live shows and plenty of charismatic releases in the future.
