The Paper Scissors

One time when I was about eight years old my father saw an advertisement on TV for Yellow Pages and he loved the accompanying music so much he wrote to the station and asked if he could have a copy of it – about a month later he received a tape in the mail and he played that darn tape over and over until I couldn’t stand the music or the ad. Who actually goes to that kind of trouble nowadays? Sad for the musicians, but we’re a lazy people who can’t be assed. So when The Paper Scissors’ (TPS) latest press release revealed to me “We Don’t Walk” (featured on Underbelly) was born of their sweat and tears it was an ‘ahhh’ moment and I couldn’t wait to rip into their latest EP. Made up of two new tracks ‘Howl’ and ‘Soldier’ and three remixes, its an offering leaving you wanting more, a tempting teaser; the beginnings of something grandiose. Delving into and exploring the title track ‘Howl’, the remixes HOWL | cleptoclectics, HOWL | the E.L.F and HOWL | spod each take a different strand of the title tracks’ core essence and run, creating three distinctly different yet complimentary creations. An Indie rock feel permeates the two original tracks, the remixes treading a more electronic, alternative, ‘playful’ path. HOWL | spod could be described as a cross between the White Stripes and Mika, rock with an electro pop icing. The boys of TPS offer you chaotic perfection; on the surface you could mistake their sound as accidental or haphazard but on closer inspection the masterful musical magic-making of their accomplishment that is ‘Howl’ has the mark of a baby born of conscientious hard work, imagination and precision music-making. This EP has left at the least, me ‘howling’ for more. A full-length album is due for release early 2010.
