:: Paul Simon - Surprise

Paul Simon

In his sixties Paul Simon is still kickin’ it. It’s been six years since his last studio release and he has now returned with his new album Surprise. Where there are few surprises on the album, Simon puts together a solid collection of songs. Teaming up with producer Brian Eno (U2, Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson) Simon managed to pull out one big surprise - synthesised beats. The traditional folk singer retains his style and subject matter but occasionally does so over some contemporary well produced beats. Star appearances by Herbie Hancock and Bill Frisell add a bit of excitement to the album as do some powerful political lyrics about Bush run America. While this new sound for Simon probably won’t pull in a whole new youth market, it’s definitely enjoyable for old Paul Simon fans and for those who like it light.
