Powderfinger

There had been great anticipation, such is the standing of Powderfinger in the Australian music scene. It was apparent that another Odyssey Number Five album was not going to occur again, and a return to their earlier work would please the fans that wanted to see a “rockier” band in action. Yes, Powderfinger give us the gritty guitars, thumping rhythms and Bernard Fanning’s bold vocals. Accordingly, and due also to strong pre-sales, the album shot straight to number one. It’s quite a loud, abrasive set that almost turns the style of their previous album upside down. It will be interesting to gauge the longevity and standing of this one. Not all the songs impact straight away as much as I thought, although I do believe that certain tracks will grow as the months proceed upon continual listening and the live playing of the songs. One thing apparent is the straight-ahead rock force and energy created. Highlights for me are “Pockets”, which sweeps you away, “Sunsets” rolls along beautifully, and “Rockin’ Rocks”, a blinding, riff-laden track that will rip up the live show forcefully. The guys remain ready and willing to open their soul and conscience in the moods created and, above all, they give it their best shot. http://www.powderfinger.com
