Red Rockets Of Borneo

Hailing from the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Red Rockets Of Borneo show with their self-titled debut album why they deserve the title as ‘one of the finds of 2011. This isn’t just a good debut; this is a bloody sensational release that reveals Red Rockets Of Borneo to be one of the most talented bands going around at the moment. From the get-go this album pumps out energy. “Victim Of Fashion” opens the album, and while it maybe tongue-in-cheek in certainly doesn’t lack in intensity. “Just Like Blood” sees Red Rockets Of Borneo sound a lot like the music that Dardenelles were pumping out in the early days while Jean Philippe Lopez’s darker vocals are a standout while the song is only made even better by some amazing axe work by James Deane and James Feros. “Sphygnoid” reveals itself as one of the songs of the year with it’s great guitar riff making it as catchy as hell. The electrifying rock returns with “Wake Me At Sparrows” but quickly gives way to the slowed down, mellow “Cold Blooded Lover”. The darkness returns with the Nick Cave-like “Party Bones” while “Plastic Radio Singalong” and “Swagger Like A Storm” show everyone how energized rock should sound. But you know that Red Rockets Of Borneo channel The Queens Of The Stone Age on “F**k S**t Up” that you onto something special… this is guaranteed to become a song of teenage anarchy. And just for something a little different the album closes with the Rockabilly sound of Ghengold. This self-titled debut album from Red Rockets Of Borneo has all the potential to become one for the memory in years to come. There are no weak tracks in sight and I get the feeling that most people will listen to this album over and over.
