:: Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch

Regina Spektor

This is one album, which if I was to be truly honest - sucked! I expected so much more from this after her hit single ‘Fidelity’ last year. Coming across as nothing more than an uncool Kate Bush clone, Spektor shows she‘s short on originality and freshness. With a whiny voice and a fair portion of music that reminds me of Missy Higgins (where one is already more than enough) 'Soviet Kitsch’ is arguably that - kitsch. Wildly eclectic and crazy, this is one spasmodic release. Taking the worst elements from artists like Tori Amos, Bush and co, Spektor is nothing more than amusement value. At times, she attempts to rock out, as evidenced in ‘Your Honor’ but ends up sounding nothing more than just a bad wannabe garage-band singer. There'll be plenty of dimwits who fall for this “arty” slop but take me word for it, stay well clear if you value music and your sanity.
