Tired of waiting for the next DJ Shadow release? Perhaps that’s what inspired Jaime Olson to become Rephrase, or perhaps not. Either way, the Sydneysider has managed to produce a very assured debut. Throughout is a liberal sprinkling of melancholic cool, that is not to say it makes dreary listening, far from it, there is much here to shake yo’ ass to, albeit with moody insouciance. Standout track ‘Way Of Life’ even boasts a funky wah-wah guitar, a disco foil to the edgy skittering beats. Sampled rhyming adds old-school authenticity, and all in all Beatcoaster is a lot of fun, with plenty of aural meat to sink your ears into. Some tracks here would sit comfortably on a Ninja Tunes release, whereas others will have you shimmying across the kitchen wishing it was Friday night and you had more than just Panadol in the bathroom cabinet. Music for your head, not just your feet.
