:: Ron Sexsmith - Time Being

Ron Sexsmith

Ron Sexsmith is an unheralded success story, but the Canadian singer-songwriter can afford to quietly boast of his legion of loyal admirers, including the likes of Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello. ‘Time Being’ is his tenth studio album, an unassuming folk offering which is unlikely to draw the spotlight in his direction but will satisfy fans nonetheless. Despite treading the treacherous path of love and infidelity, Sexsmith never descends into bitterness, instead looking to a higher power to provide answers and guidance on ‘I Think We’re Lost’ and ‘Reason For Our Love’. With track titles like ‘All in Good Time’ and ‘Never Give Up’, ‘Time Being’ could easily be dismissed as a set of overly sentimental sojourns. Those who prefer their Lennon to McCartney are advised to skip ‘Hands of Time’ and ‘The Grim Tucker’, as both songs venture a little too close to Sir Paul territory for comfort. That said, Sexsmith’s contemplative songwriting is a refreshing change from the self-absorbed angst that typifies your run of the mill break up album.
