Folk singer Rosie Burgess is a refreshingly genuine songwriter, who combines quirky storytelling lyrics with her dedicated passion for animal rights and vegetarianism. There is little doubt that Burgess’s music reflects her own life and beliefs and is about as far from the mass-produced pop industry as you can get. Highlighting the little, warm moments in life is a theme that seems to run throughout the album ‘Humble Pie’, in particular the first track ‘Random Acts’. The songs have an easy-going feel to them, with Burgess experimenting with the harmonica, violin, drums and even mandolin. The lyrics are articulate and sharp and Burgess’s voice often seems to change tone dramatically from each song to the next, keeping listeners on their toes. While probably not accessible to everyone, lovers of folks and blues will certainly appreciate ‘Humble Pie’ which is a step into Burgess’s world.
