Royksopp has again provided a wholly satisfying offering with this release, its second full length studio LP, Understanding. For those expecting a repeat of 2001’s million unit seller ‘Melody A.M’ then be prepared to be surprised, but not disappointed. The scene is well and truly set with the album's opener, the ethereal, almost classical, piece ‘Triumphant’. Where Groove Armada and Moby perhaps lean towards ‘a happier land’ in their acknowledged brilliant releases, Royksopp tend to impressively explore a darker depth more endearing to The Cure and Nick Cave merchants. Do not despair. There are still ever present dance friendly house melodies. Highlight track may well be Alpha Male: a haunting epic electronic landscape that graduates to a beat as poignant as any of 2005. Understanding is one of the best offerings of 2005 and for those willing to dive in, this album is astutely relevant, contemporary, ambient and exciting.
