:: Serena Ryder - Unlikely Emergency

Serena Ryder

Canada has unveiled another talented singer-songwriter. Serena Ryder is from Ontario and she has a gripping huskiness and powerful edge that should appeal to many of those familiar with the raw aggression that epitomised Janis Joplin many years ago. She has released previous independent albums but this is her first label release. This is my first listen to any of Serena’s work and she is very impressive. “Just Another Day” is a catchy highlight, containing great guitar work and drum rhythms. The title track has a wistful, almost romantic feel that is warmly engaging. “At Last”, made famous lately by Eva Cassidy, and before her, Etta James, is another worthy number because Serena puts her own feel and energy into it. That is the only song on the album that she didn’t write. While Ryder has some very strong lyrical content, it is certainly her voice that commands the most attention. The enthusiasm in Serena’s style is sure to react to crowds and give them the energy to respond. “Unlikely Emergency” will provide a worthwhile and invigorating listening experience. She has an honest, determined quality that shouldn’t be messed with and I can see her establishing many fans in the future. I am sure that Canadians will appreciate the fact that her raw power and flair sees her in a different light to fellow Canadian singers. Her modern folk rock instincts are a great discovery.
