:: Shy Child - Liquid Love

Shy Child

Shy Child‘s new album Liquid Love is trippy, real trippy. It's not often that you stumble across a band that is so out there they're impossible to squish into a genre, but Shy Child have done just that. Liquid Love is nothing like the Brooklyn duo's first offering, Noise Won't Stop. That album was macho, bursting out of the speakers with tracks that simply swaggered, whereas this masterpiece is psychedelic, easygoing, with a relaxed vibe that is intergalactic. For argument's sake, Shy Child have a lot of early Jamiroquai in them. Opener 'Liquid Love’ is testament to that with its twinkling electronic pop infused with a hit of futurism… just in case anyone made the mistake of calling them mainstream. ‘Criss Cross’ is another track that literally crosses so many genres that it‘s impossible to even attempt to describe it. Seven-minutes long, it's epic. Winding through mellifluous sythns and cosmic keyboard beats, completely inorganic and completely orgasmic. Fleetwood Mac's 'Everywhere’ seem to be the inspiration for the epic track ‘The Beatles’ and with a title like that, there was no chance this song was going to be anything but brilliant. Vintage, feel-good vibes spill out under lead vocalist Pete Cafarella‘s east coast croon to create a track that just screams summer roadtrip. Operatic, almost feminine vocals open the beautiful and sensual piano melody that is 'Strange Emotion’, while 'Dark Destiny rattles with a rolling drum intro and shimmery and soft rhythm that is the closest Shy Child come to abandoning the hyperactive rollercoaster they're on and embracing a ballad of sorts. Liquid Love is love at first sight. Cool and electric, this album really resonates with you. You find yourself humming their infectious tunes hours after you've stopped listening to them. Shy Child have just gone so left field with this amazing album that it's hard to put down. A definite standout album for 2010, Liquid Love is sheer perfection.
