:: Sophie Koh - All The Pretty Boys

Sophie Koh

Sophie is a very delicate singer-songwriter who takes the listener into her own folk-pop musical world. You will immediately sense the frailty and innocence in the nature of her lyrics as she tells generally uplifting stories with an acoustic guitar accompaniment. Already, the song “Anywhere” showed enough melodic pop to capture radio attention. It is probably the standout track for its good vibe and bouncy melody. But all is not that straightforward in Sophie’s style. She can be eclectic as she brings in other instruments such as a piano accordion and harmonica to engender elements of mysterious and haunting overtones. The album was produced by Richard Pleasance (ex-Boom Crash Opera) who has gone on to good things behind-the-scenes. He lent his music skills as well as the skilful Nicky Bomba and the late Paul Hester (Crowded House). It might be easy to quibble over a couple of uninspiring tunes, but generally Sophie does a fine job in this debut album and gives much feeling and sentiment to her lyrics and how she brings them across.
