:: Splashmat - Heavens Above/Carjacker

Splashmat

NSW rock band Splashmat display their eclectic funk in this new double A-side single. Heaven’s Above is a very danceable, fast-paced rockabilly-style tune that works well. Tongue-in cheek lyrics complete this ode to classic rock’n’roll as they wail “Run down by this train of lurv.” The other tracks on the single prove that this band can’t be pinned down. The other single, Carjacker, mellowly ambles through repetitive lyrics and heavy drums. Evil In The Lounge is a piano-driven jazz piece that could work wonderfully in an inner-city café. The album came across as so eclectic as to be self-indulgent. Splashmat needs to develop a more consistent sound to progress as a band, but the music they do produce is very listenable.
