:: Spoonbill - Zoomorphic

Spoonbill

If you‘ve never heard of Spoonbill than you are definitely in for a treat…or maybe a shock… depending on how open minded you really are. The third album from this musical magician is called Zoomorphic and begins with the vibrations of a creaking door before breaking into a melody of harmonica squeals and what sounds very much like burps. Spoonbill (aka Jim Moynihan) is best described as a musical revolutionist who has been bringing his unique fusion of household sounds and electro-techno beats to fans across the world since 2003. It's impossible to explain exactly what Zoomorphic's sound really is. A mix of everything from trip-hop and psychedelia to glitch-beats and just plain crazy sound bites, Spoonbill definitely does not fit any musical genre and pretty much goes out of the realm of music altogether. Zoomorphic is a mostly instruments-only album and Spoonbill categorically redefines what can be used as an instrument…yes people we're not just talking about guitars and drums here. “Sunny Side Up” starts with people commenting on how everyone 'has a nice face’ before exploding into a menagerie of squishing sounds, door bells, ringing alarms and a very ocka-sounding woman asking ‘how would you like your eggs love?’ “Wonkball” is much of the same, except this time we're treated to a bass line of racquets hitting balls and springs going off that are then layered over the grunts and groans of what sound like very focused tennis players. But the quirkiest and just plain weirdest song on Zoomorphic has to be “Finger Food”. A jamboree of cheek-pops, crunching, swallowing and giggling, “Finger Food” transforms into a fast paced electro laser tune with some cool synthesized beats. In all, Zoomorphic is an album that has to be heard to be believed. Transcending words, Spoonbill has produced what could easily be regarded as a masterpiece by some and rubbish by others.
