:: Stereophonics - Language. Sex. Violence. Other?StereophonicsIt’s interesting how opinions have been divided about this Welsh band. From an Australian’s point of view, the band couldn’t take a trick with their previous albums. I always believed they could hold their own against most and they tried different things between their first album eight years ago and the last album. There were strong, anthemic sounds to the laid-back acoustic trends. I am happy to say that this new album is set to propel the band into the upper bracket and should be considered favourably by the public at large. The sounds might surprise a few of their fervent fans but I reckon they’ve hit the mark beautifully with some brilliant songs here. Kelly Jones and band make it all sound naturally energetic and the electronic noises will excite many fans. No acoustic guitars, a terrific new drummer, and sounds that range from funky to an explosive roar. The guitars are quirky and pack a punch, while many atmospheres surround several tracks. The emphasis is on powerful vocals and pounding, catchy choruses, and thick basslines. There are still the thought provoking, sweeping ballads and charming arrangements. It’s worth noting that a new confidence has enriched Kelly Jones’s musical mind. The throaty texture remains, but he has added strength and purpose. A couple of listens by the doubters should dispel the theory of Stereophonics being a dull rock band. This album will hit you in the face with mainstream appeal and renewed vigour. It ranks right up there alongside “Word Gets Around” as one of their best offerings to date and will get even better with each listen. Highly recommended as a quality rock album and keeps the band amongst the best in Britain. | ![]() www.stereophonics.com |
