Street Sweeper Social Club

Wondering where legendary Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello has gotten to? Well, he’s teamed up with hip-hop star Boots Riley to create the ghettotastic two-piece Street Sweeper Social Club. First things first, Street Sweeper Social Club (try saying that three times fast) ain’t you’re softcore rock-rap, ala Kayne West and Pharell. When these boys say rap they mean rap in all its political, street-inspired glory and when they say rock they really mean the good-old days of rock not seen since the Rolling Stones took an extended hiatus. Street Sweeper Social Club and their debut album of the same name are all about Guitar Hero anthems with a social conscious. ‘The Squeeze’ spews pure hatred for the “mack mechanic” world rulers, while extremely tight electric riffs and pounding drums beats courtesy of the Galactic’s Stanton Moore make up the melody. ‘100 Little Curses’ is more of the same rock rage except this time Riley’s venom is directed towards the Dolce and Gabbana wearing, Ferrari driving members of society, who he attacks with some very slick hip-hop lyrics. The best thing about Street Sweeper Social Club is simply how unpretentious they are. This album has no gimmicks, no computer-generated tunes and definitely no synth-upped beats. Instead its pure drum + electric and bass guitar + hip-hop vocals + clever lyrics = magic. These two music veterans have put all their years of experience into producing what is a nostalgic heavy rock album. Street Sweeper Social Club is definitely a welcome change from all the self-absorbed pimp hip-hop and fake dance-electro that has flooded the radio scene lately. Monumental grassroots music, this album is perfect for those who miss the good old days of real rock ‘n’ roll and songs with soul.
