:: The Cat Empire - So Many Nights

The Cat Empire

We all love The Cat Empire and they‘ve entertained us over the last couple of years with some killer tunes and albums. But here's an album that has them falling off their perch. It's all very ho-hum really. If not for track four 'The Darkness’, a rousing, upbeat, unpredictable number, this album wouldn‘t have been given any more spins. The question must be posed. Has Harry's side project Jackson Jackson effectively spelt the end for this band? The reason I ask is that album had energy and freshness, which 'So Many Nights’ so sorely lacks. There‘s little newness or originality to this album and it sounds very downbeat and well… boring. It's simply a case of “heard it all before” I'm afraid. Even serious Cat fans of this normally eclectic outfit won't find much joy here. This is very much Cat Empire by numbers with horns, predictable rhythms and beats, expected rhymes. I guess if something works then why change it but surely, the Empire boys want to feel challenged rather than churn out essentially the same material they have with past albums. My advice, buy Jackson Jackson's album 'The Fire Is On The Bird’ as it is what this album clearly isn't - original!
