The Gear

This 4-track EP by Melbourne based 3-piece swaggering rock outfit The Gear is being touted as one to watch in 2005. Comprising of sixties/ seventies influenced garage rock songs and at times reminding one of The Vines very underrated second album ‘Winning Days’, The Gear have taken a cautious positive step forward to discovering their own sound. The vocal work is, for lack of a better word, ‘nasally’ and more reminiscent of The Monkees rather than the Stooges thus leaning more towards pop than power….a wear it on your sleeve nod to The Easybeats is not necessarily a bad thing but does leave you wanting a little more creativity. The tracks ‘Always Changin’ and ‘Faces at Me’ , perhaps those less likely to be picked up by radio execs are the more satisfying, it showcases the boys following their own lead and getting a little adventurous, rather than relying on tried and tested formulas. Seeing the band live may be the impetus that one needs to fully appreciate this offering…the Live reviews of The Gear have used terms such as ‘electrifying’ and ‘rock n roll swagger’…..some of this may be lost on the recorded works… however, I am sure we have not heard the last of The Gear and you can expect a full length album to be forthcoming. The single ‘I’ve Got Trouble’ is being played at all your usual Radio and Video Programs and even in the Hollywood Movie ‘Sahara’…go Boys !!!!
