The Hot Lies

Unless you have been living under a rock of late you have no doubt heard The Hot Lies' track ‘Emergency! Emergency!’ It’s a fantastic sign of the times that the band's chart success with the track is only a small reflection of a year when 50% of the top chart positions have been taken by Australian artists. This success has not been accidental however, and it has to be said that it’s one hell of a catchy tune. A rock anthem if there ever was one, ‘Emergency!’ is a song built on a foundation of thrashing guitars and pounding drums. For rock enthusiasts the story only gets better from here, as the album ‘Ringing in the Sain’ delivers one thumping track after another. Worth particular mention are ‘Tokyo’ and ‘Diamond Eyes’, two delicious servings of this rock delight. To describe the bands sounds as simply rock would be somewhat limiting though, as there are elements of Emo and Punk present. The dark imagery and lyrics are reflective in some ways of current successes such as My Chemical Romance and AFI. ‘Running Low’ showcases the bands ability to explore genres, whilst remaining true their own sound. The Hot Lies have shown through this album that they have the ability to create accessible and enjoyable rock. The songs are catchy enough for the mainstream, but not so cheesy that lovers of the genre would be turned off. Another Australian success? Given the quality of this album I would say it’s a given.
