:: The Mudcakes - Cave Baby

The Mudcakes

If you’ve played those Wiggles and Hi-5 films over and over so often that they are beginning to seem like a torture device then perhaps it is time to give another Aussie group making music for kids a go and have a listen to The Mudcakes’s new album ‘Cave Baby’. This is the second album for The Mudcakes who describe their music as Kindie Rock. This two piece is made up of Australian singer/songwriter Sherry Rich and her American partner, Rick Plant. Their first album, ‘Songs For Little Monkeys’ was voted amongst the Top Ten Kids CDs of 2004 by ‘The New York Post’. It’s clear once you listen to ‘Cave Baby’ that this couple have children and that this album is inspired by their family life. What makes ‘Cave Baby’ so good is that Rich and Plant are good songwriters who call upon genres such as country, bluegrass and reggae to give their album a touch of class. The catchy country sound of ‘Baby’s Gonna Crawl Any Day’ which have you clapping along in no time and its refreshing to hear a song like ‘Bugs’ that is a simply song for kids but manages to consist of more than just one riff.

The Mudcakes give the classic ‘Shortnin’ Bread’ a country makeover while ‘Grumpy Bum’, ‘Things That Mum And Dads Say’, ‘Spit It Out’ and ‘Please Don’t Polka The Baby’ all touch on subjects that parents will have had to deal with (or phrases they have said) at sometime during their kids lives. There are more than enough songs here for kids to clap and dance to with ‘Cave Baby’, ‘Mop Top’, ‘Jump’ and ‘I Am A Sock’ guaranteed to hastily become favorites. ‘I Love Playing With You’ is also a great track that sees The Mudcakes get their instruments to imitate various animals. Who says kids music has to be boring, ‘Cave Baby’ is the kind of kid’s album that they can listen to over and over without Mummy and Daddy wanting to throw the CD out the car window.
