:: The Ovals - Into The Eyes Of Those Who SleepThe OvalsIf you’re one of the people out there that still shares the misconception that the words progressive rock are dirty words than you need to give Melbourne trio The Ovals a listen to. Their new EP Into The Eyes Of Those Who Sleep is a beacon in this genre and shows that when these guys are likened to legendary bands such as Pink Floyd and Radiohead people aren’t pulling your leg. This is a sensational four track that wins you over from the very beginning. Opening track ‘Refugees’ has a summery feel and its mash of rolling old school guitar, organ and electronica works well together. ‘Lost With Bones’ reveals The Ovals have real talent, there is a strong ‘Ghost Riders On The Storm’ feel to the track with an underlying haunting electronic beat that helps your mind wonder. And while I’m not usually a fan of tracks with repetitive lyrics I have to admit that the experimental sound of ‘Heretic’ one me other… I even went back and gave it a second listen. The EP then closes with the very smooth ‘Persephone’s Groove’… a track that left me thinking that The Ovals could well be the next big thing on the Australian music front. After listening to Into The Eyes Of Those Who Sleep all I can really say is I’m hoping The Ovals make a full-length album soon, because I can’t wait to hear more. | ![]() |
