:: The Veils - The Runaway Found

The Veils

This is a real eye-opener to some beautiful pop music. The band, formerly of New Zealand, now bases itself in Britain. Upon reading that Bernard Butler produced the record, you can definitely sense the Suede mark on it. It comes to bear on tracks 2 and 3, “Guiding Light” and “Lavinia”, the latter has an arresting appeal. Moving on through the set, there are the striking elements that is the strength of British pop – melodic vocals, efficient musicianship, serious instincts, and pure expression. Lead singer Finn Andrews and mates might remind of The Verve, Muse, and Echo & the Bunnymen at times, yet they are great starting points. Other highlights include the whopping “The Tide That Left And Never Came Back” and the string-laden final track “The Nowhere Man”. Such songs indicate the promise of a band destined for much bigger things. Undeniable potential from The Veils makes this one of the best debuts of recent times.
