The Verses

The Verses brings together the talents of sister-brother singer/songwriter duo Ella and Jesse Hooper, formerly of the multi-platinum recording act, Killing Heidi. Much of their layoff over the past few years has been devoted to reinventing their wheel as music makers and the result is an an album ‘Seasons’, and something they can be very pleased with. This comeback album shows the songwriting maturity gained over the years and the personal nature of the songs. It has a warm, laid-back vibe with a country-rock inspiration. Ella‘s voice has been one of Australia's best in the last decade and it has only improved with experience. The melodies come effortlessly and the backing instrumentation is very tight. It has come a fair way from their previous work - the catchy hooks and fine songwriting. The music probably won't sit at the top of commercial playlists due to its stripped-back, rootsy instincts, but I don't believe this record is meant to do that. It will bring the Hooper names back in vogue and show how far they've arrived as total musicians. 'Seasons’ comes at the right time and place for them and I am sure The Verses will get enough momentum to continue making quality music.
