:: The Wombats - Kill The DirectorThe WombatsThat any mention of The Wombats inevitably recalls to me their appalling single Let’s Dance to Joy Division formed in my mind a firm prejudice against the band before I had ever listened to their far more palatable track Kill The Director. However the more recent single, reissued after the success of the other, is not particularly pretentious, nor too clumsy or earnest. It’s actually not bad. Starting with a chopped-up guitar back-and-forth, the track delivers a few clunky lines about East Enders and angsty teenage bands before beginning a fairly catchy build-up layered upon Matthew Murphy’s repetition of “This is no Bridget Jones, this is no Bridget Jones”. The track is catchy, and well written enough to satisfy anyone already predisposed towards The Wombats' indie-pop. If such music isn’t to your taste however, Kill The Director is polite enough not to insist on being heard. We can only hope that The Wombats continue conduct themselves with such propriety in future |
