:: Timbaland & Magoo - Under Construction II

Timbaland & Magoo

One of the greatest hip-hop producers of our time has taken centre stage with what is possibly the best hip-hop album of the year, Under Construction II. Timbaland is credited for discovering and producing major acts such Aaliyah, Ginuiwine and most notably, Missy “Misdemeanour” Elliot. His posse is a nice anti-dote to the long-standing East Coast/West Coast domination and emerge as the distinct Southern State pioneers. A result is a unique and honest album that pays tribute to the “old school”, yet stays undeniably modern. All the tracks are rather minimalist, using only a few sound effects and outstanding rhythm and percussion to back up their thought-provoking lyrics. Yet, the effect never feels incomplete. Rather, it sounds, funky, tribal, edgy and booty shaking. Think of Missy Elliott’s latest hits, where Timbaland’s influence reigns supreme. Of course, this protege features on the album in the track Cop That Shit with a whole lotta vibe and attitude. Another thing I liked about the album is that it is diverse and touches on different issues throughout. That Shit Ain’t Gonna Work is direct, raw and to the point; Indian Flute is enchanting, modern and very funky while Brandi lends her breathy vocals to N 2 Da Music to a track that has a healthy blend of innocence and vibe. This is a fantastic album to lounge back to and get you thinking, yet you are likely to find yourself grinding, shaking and pretending to be a homeboy by track two. There is nothing under construction here though – Timbaland is a creative genius and a worthy MC, putting himself in the same league as the mega-talent he nurtures.
