:: Tinariwen - The Radio Tisdas SessionsTinariwenIt is difficult to comment on music originating in a foreign culture, spoken in a foreign tongue. There is a danger of either disregarding it because it is incomprehensible, or worshipping it as some kind of ‘world music of the month’ simply because of an exotic origin. Tinariwen is a band consisting of Tuareg tribesmen. The Tuaregs are a nomadic North African tribe who suffered a long string of misfortunes. Tinariwen was formed by young Tuaregs in Libyan camps in the 80s, and have toured a lot since turning professional. The album is good, it is blues that are very easy to listen to, it sounds almost peaceful and relaxing. Presumably the lyrics are describing scenes of horror, pain, and loss, but to those blissfully ignorant of the words meaning - such as, anyone likely to buy the CD - it means only getting half the package, hearing without comprehension. Admittedly, the whole ‘world music’ thing is basically built around that and it seems to be doing okay. Tinariwen is worth a listen for those into world music and hearing something a bit different. | ![]() |
