:: Unearth - Alive From The Apocalypse

Unearth

If you listen to Unearth’s vast back catalogue of releases, it’s easy to hear how much the Boston based melodic metalcore act have improved and strengthened with every new release. Not surprisingly, the band’s 2006 release ‘III: In The Eyes Of Fire’ was the group’s most successful and critically acclaimed effort to date, and duly placed the band amongst the elite within the metalcore scene. After what was undoubtedly their most successful year of touring to date, the five-piece act decided the time was right to put together a DVD, with ‘Alive From The Apocalypse’ an all encompassing double disc set that will leave fans more than satisfied in the lead up to the release of the band’s new album later in the year.

The first of this two disc set is a full live show, shot while performing in Pomona, California during their sold out headlining tour alongside Darkest Hour, August Burns Red and Suicide Silence. Over the course of eleven songs, Unearth quite literally tear up the stage with a performance that’s every bit as brutal as their studio releases. Shot with nine cameras, Unearth’s onstage live energy and level of intensity is captured perfectly without resorting to the quick cutaway editing that is generally utilised in so many of today’s DVDs. As for the show itself, Unearth reproduce their recorded material live immaculately, with tracks such as ‘Giles’, ‘The Glorious Nightmare’, ‘Endless’, ‘March Of The Mutes’, ‘The Great Dividers’ and ‘Black Hearts Now Reign’ obvious standouts.

On the second disc, Unearth really live up to their namesake and give fans plenty of value for money. Opening up the disc is a seventy minute feature documentary detailing the bands ten year history. Featuring candid interviews from virtually everyone from within the metal/metalcore scene, former members, label associates, crew members and the band themselves, and spliced together with footage from almost every era of the band’s existence, the documentary is fast paced, informative and quite often humorous, as it pieces together the band’s story from humble beginnings, right through to their present day success. Aside from the documentary, we’re also treated to a ridiculous three minute tattoo special, two additional live performances, eight promotional video clips and a huge photo gallery.

Unearth have really left no stone unturned on ‘Alive From The Apocalypse’. Quite literally, everything you could possibly ask for from the band is on here, which means that from a fans perspective, this release really is as every bit as essential as their last studio release.
