:: Various Artists - Cannot Buy My Soul: The Songs of Kev Carmody

Various Artists

A smorgesboard of beats, lyrics, tunes and vocal talent, “Cannot Buy My Soul: The Songs of Kev Carmody” delivers a hand picked selection of songs which herald the diversity of human emotions and life experiences. It’s a unique compilation, moving and real in both feeling and tone. Its make up consists mainly of sombre and deep tracks, which force the senses to take in and listen to the messages behind each song, with seriousness. Artists peppered throughout include the likes of Missy Higgins, the John Butler Trio and The Waifs. “The Young Dancer is Dead by Last Kinection bumps up the heat with a saucy and sassy hip hop number, which serves as a welcome change from the serious nature of the compilation. Bernard Fanning’s “Elley” strikes a chord about the effects of terrorism, violence and discrimination, while the title track "Cannot Buy My Soul”, is an absolutely gorgeous country number by Archie Roach, about the strength of the human resolve in extra-ordinary situations. “Darkside” by Tex Perkins is a great track because it is spoken rather than sung. The moving song of juvenile anger is contrasted against the poignant, simple melody of a guitar, whose strings are flickered gently between the players’ fingers in one constant and repetitive beat. It is a very stark piece. Overall a really great compilation to listen to whilst sitting in front of the fire on a rainy day, with a warm cuppa.
