:: The Whitlams - Beautiful As YouThe WhitlamsAfter an initial listen, I thought the song a bit depressing and boring. After a second, and then a third listen, I realised maybe it‘s not depressing, just boring. Unfortunately, another adjective that could be added as well is 'corny.’ Yes it‘s good background music, sort of like fits into a 'nothing to do sit around type’ song. Actually, it is so annoying that it might actually make you turn it off and do something productive. The lyrics are romantic but useless. There are irrelevant references to Manhattan and Nova Scotian women. Lead singer, Tim Freedman sings in almost an very Australian accent, something reminiscent of Missy Higgins. You know this accent, it‘s the one that Aussie expatriates get sentimental over beers in Shepard's Bush, London. “Beautiful As You” could be a heartfelt song, but the deliverance of the song is not very convincing or heartfelt. Fans who like the Whitlams’ previous stuff might like this because it sounds very similar to past songs. The Whitlams are a talented Australian band, but “Beautiful As You” reminds of a generic, flat ballad that we have all heard before, somewhere. | ![]() |
