:: Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

Wilco

Do you remember what it was like as a kid lying out in the backyard staring up into the sky? Do you remember how free and relaxed it made you feel, like there was nothing in the world that could cause you issue or harm?Well, don’t ask me how they did it, but Wilco have managed to recreate this feeling and channel it into the music on their latest album, ‘Sky Blue Sky’. It is a simple, straightforward and intoxicating album. Though ‘Sky Blue Sky’ is a treat in its entirety, there are a few standouts that give it an extra polish and shine. Worth special mention is the albums title track, ‘Sky Blue Sky’, which is all laid back rolling clouds and country fields. There is no urgency here, just a warm suggestion to take your time and enjoy the music on offer. It sets the tone of the album, and is a good indication of what listeners can expect. The band changes pace on the track ‘Walken’, throwing in a honky tonk base line, and a definite shout out of respect to country roots. The track that clinches the deal for the album is ‘What Light’, a song that is every inch a classic of Bob Dylan proportions. I realise this is a big claim, but be sure to listen to it before you make a decision. Like a Dylan song, ‘What Light’ is both understated and powerful, poignant lyrics set to a no frill beat. It is the jewel in this crown, and sure to shine on for many years to come.
