:: You Am I - Convicts

You Am I

They’re back….The new and seventh album by You Am I, ‘Convicts’, is an explosive thirty-six minutes of rock swagger. Punch Drunk with Tim Rodgers heartfelt, quirky lyrics signature guitar sounds and the inimitable Australian bred and spread rhythm section. The boys don’t seem to have compromised for friendly record execs – over sixteen recording days and five studios the tracks here bare the soul of their most charmingly raucous work. One gets the feeling they played exactly what they wanted, when they wanted with scant regard for potential Aust Idol remix albums. A splendid album to put on with friends around. Few sing more appropriately to the Aussie post X Gen than Mr Rodgers. When he leads with ‘I’m a mess’ then you know the rest of the song is going to be an engaging listen. The first single is a tight / loose rock track [read as: typical You Am I] it may not be their most melodic work to date - but guaranteed to keep fans smiling. Keep an ear for ‘Secrets’ the track most likely to be single number two and perhaps to catapult You Am I back into the face of mainstream Australia, which many will agree is where they deserve to be. Overall, this is a great ‘return’ album… Bring on the live shows.
