:: Soundstage presents: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live In Concert

In supporting one of America‘s most enduring and respected rock & roll mainstays, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ fans can attest to its great energy and dedication. Now, for those who may have missed the opportunity to attend one of the group's concerts in person, this memorable Soundstage performance offers the next best thing to being there.

Performing timeless hits both old and new in addition to unreleased and rarely heard songs, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers prove themselves to be a terrific band on the live stage. Accordingly, they continue to earn critical praise and adoration of their fans for their straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll and their refusal to compromise their integrity. Along the way, they have been recognised as one of America‘s greatest rock bands of the last thirty years and were inducted into the Rock 'n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, their first year of eligibility.

They are in top form here. The bonus songs on Disc 2 are very good. In fact, there is excellent production quality on the whole package. If you ever thought about buying a Tom Petty DVD get this one.

Recorded for a two-part PBS Soundstage, Petty employs the Chicago locale as an entry into the blues and R&B that are at the foundation of rock & roll, and to a lesser extent, his music. Spread out over two DVDs, this results in a fascinating and exciting show, where the extensive covers are just as interesting as the few hits he gets around to playing.

PBS originally broadcast this 2003 performance over two nights, and the two-DVD set adds another half-hour of live footage, including two songs from an earlier show in Los Angeles.

Note the stirring version of “Baby, Please Don‘t Go” that takes its cue from Van Morrison and Them's 1964 recording. Throughout the show, Petty places other songs from rock's past, including the Animals’ “I‘m Cryin’” and the Stones' obscure gem “Down Home Girl,” alongside his own tunes, demonstrating his solid craftsmanship while paying tribute to its source.

This live performance by the hard-working group showcases the sound that has won over fans and critics alike and garnered the band numerous awards. It is very good value for money.
