The prestigious awards recognise the efforts by Australian/New Zealand songwriters over the past twelve months. The evening featured performances by KASEY CHAMBERS, ESKIMO JOE, EVERMORE, MELINDA SCHNEIDER, DANIEL MERRIWEATHER, DALLAS CRANE, TIM FREEDMAN and SARAH BLASKO. Presenters included HARRY VANDA, BILLY THORPE, KRAM, BECCY COLE, CHIT CHAT, YUMI STYNES, TIM FREEDMAN and PETER GARRETT. Here is the list of winners. Song of the Year Songwriter of The Year Breakthrough Award Ted Albert Award For Outstanding Services to Australian Music Most Performed Australian Work Most Performed Foreign Work Most Performed Country Work Most Performed Dance Work Most Performed Australian Work Overseas Most Performed Jazz Work Melbourne singer-songwriter MISSY HIGGINS took out the prestigious APRA Song of the Year with the infectious hit Scar - a song she admits she had a love/hate relationship with before accepting it as a catchy song. “It's basically a song about people's need to pigeonhole things in order to process them. It's also about realising you've trusted the wrong people and finding a way to benefit from the scars they've left behind.” Voted by in excess of 15,000 Australian songwriters, at 21 years of age, Missy Higgins is the youngest ever songwriter to take out this major, peer voted award. Missy also won the Breakthrough Award and it signifies the wonderful last twelve months of her career. JET received two APRA Awards. The Melbourne band won the category of MOST PERFORMED WORK OVERSEAS with the hugely popular anthem Are You Gonna Be My Girl - a song that has resonated right around the world. The group also took out the prestigious SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR, which is determined by the APRA Board of Writer and Publisher Directors. Other highlights included: PETE MURRAY won the APRA Award for MOST PERFORMED AUSTRALIAN WORK with his popular ballad So Beautiful. DANIEL MERRIWEATHER won the category of MOST PERFORMED DANCE WORK with City Rules - a song that was enthusiastically embraced by urban music aficionados and the media. Promoter and charity fundraiser MICHAEL CHUGG was named the recipient of the TED ALBERT AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICES TO AUSTRALIAN MUSIC. With over 40 years experience, Michael Chugg is one of the most prominent, respected and colourful promoters within Australian music and around the world. His efforts in fundraising music events such as Waveaid and Universal Appeal show the worth of his standing in the industry.
