:: Spotlight :: 2005 ARIA Awards - winners & picturesBy: Carmine PascuzziIt was a huge night for the Australian music industry with the staging of the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards recently. Held at the Sydney Superdome, the result was gratifying in the salutation of some of the hard-working performers of the last twelve months with well deserved awards. Multiple award winners were Missy Higgins (five categories) and Ben Lee (three categories). It says something for their creative songwriting skills and dedication that voters recognised their efforts in a big way. Others rewarded were Grinspoon (first win in ten years), Eskimo Joe (long under-estimated), Mia Dyson (one of Melbourne's hardest working performers), and Daniel Merriweather (despite not getting much attention by local media on the night, those in the know recognise his tremendous talent in the R&B scene). Other great wins occurred for Perth band End of Fashion, dance act Infusion (two years in a row), Anthony Callea, and the legendary Jimmy Barnes for his deserved place, as a solo artist, in the ARIA Hall of Fame. Jimmy‘s speech was one of the highlights, as were his and all the other live performances. The show was well produced and there was hardly a dry eye in the place when Neil Finn, in a special guest appearance, stepped up to the microphone to pay tribute to the late Paul Hester (Neil's Crowded House colleague) with a poignant rendition of 'Better Be Home Soon’.
