:: Spotlight :: The Australian Video Music Awards (AVMA's) 2006

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

The second MTV Australia Video Music Awards (AVMA) will be held at the Sydney Superdome on April 12, 2006. The Superdome is seen as essential to the needs of the event, which drew a viewing audience of 1.9 million for the inaugural event in 2005.

MTV is looking to go beyond the ordinary to stage a spectacular show at the SuperDome. It sees the venue go beyond the staging of the ARIA Awards and position itself in grand terms in holding events of global appeal.

The awards will be telecast live on the Foxtel, Austar and Optus pay-TV platforms and, for the first time, broadcast on the Austereo radio network. MTV and sister channel VH1 will lead up to it with artist profiles, behind-the-scenes specials and red carpet highlights. The 2006 event will broadcast live to a potential wordwide audience of 1 billion people across MTV's global network of music channels and syndication partnerships.

Nominations for the categories will be determined via a voting panel made up of key members of the media and music industry. Viewers will vote via SMS, the website, and FOXTEL's digital interactive voting.

Australian artists Rogue Traders and Lee Harding, along with New Zealand’s Savage are set to perform at the MTV Australia Video Music Awards (MTV AVMAs) at the Sydney SuperDome on April 12. Joining other top international and local artists including The Darkness, James Blunt, The Veronicas and End of Fashion, the performances will beam across the world to a potential audience of 1.8 billion MTV viewers, providing unprecedented international exposure for local talent.

The Rogue Traders sure know how to make an entrance with their hot single ‘Voodoo Child’ exploding across the Australian airwaves last year to debut in the top 10 on the charts. Performing at the MTV AVMAs for the first time, the Rogue Traders will rock the crowd with their distinctive electro-punk style.

Lee Harding was thrust into the limelight with Australian Idol and has quickly become a local favourite with his individual punk style.

New Zealand hip-hop artist Savage has had a huge year with the release of two highly successful singles, ‘Swing’ and ‘Moonshine feat Akon’, the latter achieving double platinum sales in New Zealand after a staggering 7 weeks at number one.

International skateboarding legend, Danny Way, and singer-songwriter Kate Alexa are confirmed to present at the star-studded awards ceremony.
