:: Spotlight :: Interview with Gossling

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Gossling is a Victorian singer-songwriter who has made big steps over the past eighteen months, and is really beginning to stamp her mark as a capable musician on the Australian music scene. Appearances at various festivals and support slots alongside acts such as Lamb, Jamie Cullum, The Whitlams and Lior, have made it a rewarding time. Radio airplay has been steadily building, from good reviews from her first EP, to the point where radio station JJJ have given her solid support.

Now comes Gossling's second EP “Until Then”. It shows the development that has endeared her to many fans and features the catchy upbeat song “I Was Young” which has again garnered good radio support. I had the opportunity to have a chat to Gossling as she prepared for her next tour - in support of the impressive Oh Mercy - and asked about her beginnings in music. “I grew up in country Victoria and had a great childhood growing up in the country. I am thankful for that, but I could see city life beckoning. I came to Melbourne to study Psychology at university but I had this passion for learning music. The musicians who play with me as Gossling are friends that I met while studying for my degree. As for a musical background, my family had never been musical, however they have been big music listeners. There wasn’t really one thing that inspired me to take up music as a profession. I’m lucky to have had huge support from my family, which has allowed me to make music a profession.”

Of her songwriting tendencies, she explains, "I write all of the music and lyrics and when the song is ready for a full band arrangement I’ll take it to the guys. Sometimes I’ll know exactly what I want from each instrument and sometimes they’ll help with their own parts

Gossling has enjoyed good support from particular radio stations and she is keen to build on that with the new EP. It’s very gentle listening, quite mellow and easy to listen to. She allows her vocals to soar enormously in front of the lush instrumentation she creates.

When asked about her favourite singer/s, she immediately states the name of Damien Rice. “Damien is an incredible singer-songwriter. His album ‘O’ enhanced my ideas my ideas on how I approach my own work and he introduced me to a delicate, emotional style of writing. He is an incredible lyricist and his arrangements are staggering.” Gossling recalls, like me, the terrific performance he gave at St.Kilda's Prince of Wales Hotel several years ago.

‘Until Then’ now looks set to follow on from Gossling's debut, with first single “I Was Young” already becoming a regular addition to JJJ radio. Look out for her on the Oh Mercy tour.
