:: Spotlight :: Jack Awards 2004

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

The inaugural Jack Awards were held in Sydney recently. It recognises the best in live performers. It was a pretty informal, irreverent night's entertainment with some big names in Australian rock music on hand to play live and receive awards. It came after approximately 80,000 votes were received online since earlier in the year. Sponsor Jack Daniels has laid the foundation for a growing event in
recognising that live music is the magnetic force which drives many music lovers.

The event was held at the City Recital Hall in the Sydney central area and amongst the guests were Alex Lloyd, You Am I, Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses, Dallas Crane, Amiel, Abi Tucker, The Spazzys, The Camels, plus members of George, The Sleepy Jackson, silverchair, Powderfinger, and The Superjesus. Powderfinger was voted as the Best Live Band, John Butler the Best Male Performer, and Sarah McLeod the Best Female Performer. Several live performances, by Dallas Crane (terrific opening to the show), You Am I, and Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses, plus a great hosting job by Jabba (from Channel V) ensured an insult-filled and humorous presentation. A notable highlight was the finale, with a supergroup formed, comprising members of silverchair, The Sleepy Jackson, Powderfinger, and The Superjesus' Sarah McLeod belting out a spirited rendition of Cold Chisel's “Star Hotel”. It drew strong applause and showed just how good some of our musicians are.
