World renowned solo artist and Razorlight frontman, Johnny Borrell, surprised fans at a New York rooftop party on June 8 as he jumped onstage to give an impromptu performance of tracks from his debut solo album ‘Borrell 1’ as well as some of Razorlight’s greatest hits.

Borrell was a guest at a party hosted at Capitol Records Rooftop in New York as part of the weekend’s Miller Music Tour. Other DJ acts had been performing through the evening but, as the sunset fell over the Big Apple’s skyline, Borrell delighted fans by picking up instruments left onstage before asking Fred Stitz, Darren Berry and Joao Mello from his solo band Zazou to join him.

Borrell and his band began with new song Joshua Amrit and played a ninety minute set that included Razorlight favourites Golden Touch and Somewhere Else along with tracks from his forthcoming album. The DJs appearing at the party were more than happy to take a break as Borrell led the vibrant crowd through a number of sing-alongs before finishing his set with a raucous rendition of America.

Earlier this week, Borrell announced that he will be releasing a new solo album, his first studio album for five years. The album, titled ‘Borrell 1’ will be released in the UK on July 22 through Stiff Records / Virgin EMI. The album was originally recorded on a four track recorder by Borrell and a group of musicians including Razorlight bass player Freddie Stitz, Brazilian saxophonist Joao Mello and Darren Berry. After debuting the songs live, Borrell decided to record them in London, enlisting the skills of legendary producer Trevor Horn.

Speaking at the Miller Music Tour party after his impromptu performance, Borrell said: “We’d been talking to a lot of the guests and they’d been asking us about the new music, as well as about Razorlight, so it was a good opportunity to get up and play for the hell of it. The Zazou band are all brilliant musicians and when we play together something special happens so we thought ‘why not’? I’m very excited about the new album and its kind of a party album so it seemed like the right thing to do to especially when you’re on the Capitol Records Rooftop with New York behind you.”

The first single from ‘Borrell 1’, ‘Pan-European Supermodel Song (Oh! Gina)’, was made available via iTunes and other online retailers on June 4. From June 11, Borrell will be back in the UK for a series of small album preview shows, starting in Southampton and finishing in London at the iconic 100 Club on June 18.

The Miller Music Tour has brought together hundreds of music fans from all over the world to taste the bright lights and energetic nightlife of New York, giving them a true Miller Time experience. Fanomm, a DJ collective made up by Chew-Fu, J-Cast and Substantial, started the Miller Music Tour in style as they played a blistering set on Friday’s opening party at Dream Downtown’s PH-D rooftop club. On June 9, the tour moves to Randall’s Island for the Governors Ball Music Festival, where tour guests will be given exclusive access via the Miller Genuine Draft VIP zone and will see world class acts including Kanye West, the XX and The Lumineers.

On Monday (June 10), the Miller Music Tour will finish in style, as DJ, Producer and one third of Swedish House Mafia, Sebastian Ingrosso, headlines the legendary Highline Ballroom to provide an extraordinary finale. A surprise announcement also confirmed that long-time Swedish House Mafia vocal collaborator John Martin will appear alongside Ingrosso at the gig. The invite-only show, available to lucky competition winners, will see Ingrosso film the official live video for his summer blockbuster single, ‘Reload’.

The Miller Music Tour is taking place in New York from 7-11 June 2013.
