:: Spotlight :: Interview with The Veronicas

The Veronicas have taken little time in establishing themselves as one of Australia’s premier music acts, and twin sisters Lisa and Jess Origliasso return to Australia for their Hook Me Up Tour, their first in Australia since their shows for Coca-Cola Live in 2006.

Taking to stages in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Brisbane and the Gold Coast for Frontier Touring Company, this will be The Veronicas largest headlining tour to date, and, with their greater repertoire, it promises to be their best. In the last eighteen months The Veronicas have played across the United States and Europe alongside some of music’s finest talent including Blondie, Ashlee Simpson, and Evermore.

Hook Me Up” (out now through Warner Music), the debut single from their forthcoming album, has sent The Veronicas flying back into the public spotlight with a bang. Hook Me Up sets the bar high for the hotly anticipated follow up record to their 2005 ARIA-award winning debut The Secret Life of…

I had the pleasure of catching up with the girls just prior to the tour.

Tell us about the song “Hook Me Up”

When it came to writing for this record it had been two years since we had time to think about it. We wanted to do something a little bit different from the last one. We were inspired by the whole electro underground scene. Hook Me Up was one of the first songs we wrote for the album and it ended up being the first single. We knew who we wanted to work with as far as production went. We did so much experimenting on the last record.

Is “Hook Me Up”indicative of what we should expect from the other tracks?

We wanted to make it a different album to the first one and we had a direction in our heads as to where we were going. We wrote pretty much the whole record. This is the most electronic pop song on the record. The other tracks are dirty, electro pop with lots of guitars, but still a dance beat behind it. This is a very personal record.

What can we expect on stage?

The biggest shows we’ve done so far. Two albums worth of songs to do and a good mix of electro pop and rock pop. It will still be quite a rock show with a big stage production and a few surprises. We did lots of festivals in the States – busy and lots of fun.

I understand that you had the Madden brothers (from Good Charlotte) involved in the album…

Benji and Joel got involved in the writing process, plus other artists. It’s good to learn from people like them.

What was the process in making the album?

It’s been very hands-on with this record. Most of the album we actually recorded in Los Angeles in our living room. It was very creative.

Your clothes line has been selling well in Target stores and the Keds shoes promotion worked well…

We’ve had four ranges with Target. It’s been an awesome experience. The latest range has sold out. We were heavily involved in the design. Keds was a one-off. It was awesome at the time, and being involved with Mischa Barton in the promotion. She had the everyday American girl attitude whilst we had the rock chick look. We did quite a few events for them.

You influence many young girls with your fashion sense…

We just dress for moods. I suppose we are seen as fashion icons for young girls. It’s another creative avenue.

Do you like the Internet and how you can interact with fans?

We’re heavily involved with the Internet, esp Myspace. It’s made it easier to be in contact with the fans. It’s a great avenue. Our brother is in charge of the fanclub now.

You are Wildlife Ambassadors in Queensland. Tell us a little about that?

As we are from Brisbane we visited the zoo up in Queensland when our band came out a couple of years ago. We saw the animal hospital and fell in love with it. We were honoured to get involved in the charity. It's good to get the message out to young people about protecting the wildlife.

What is the plan for the next few months?

This will be the last tour of Australia for a while. Then we’ll focus on the international scene in 2008 - USA, Europe, and Asia.

The album “Hook Me Up” is out now through Warner Music.
